WASHINGTON (TNND) — Some Republicans on social media platform X criticized Taylor Lorenz, a journalist who has written for leading publications, on Sunday for her comments on the press’s coverage of Luigi Mangione, the suspected killer of a health insurance company’s CEO.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Mike Lee, R-Utah, all replied to a clip of Lorenz’s comments, which were given during an interview with CNN Senior Correspondent Donie O’Sullivan, on X.
Lorenz told O’Sullivan that it’s hilarious to see millionaire pundits on television “clutching their pearls” about people obsessing over a murderer since Americans lionize criminals and murderers regularly.
“This is beyond vile. Utterly heinous,” Miller said.
Sen. Lee wrote in his post, “imagine if a conservative said that in any analogous context,” without explaining what he was referring to.
Lorenz noted during the interview that there’s a disconnect between narratives press outlets push and the public sentiment.
“And you see that in moments like this,” she said.
“I can tell you I saw the biggest audience growth that I’ve ever seen, because people were like, ‘oh, somebody – some journalist – is actually speaking to the anger that we feel,” Lorenz, who has an online magazine on Substack, added.
Sen. Cruz, calling Lorenz a communist, said she is openly celebrating murder but is treated as an “actual” journalist.
Republicans have previously criticized Lorenz for comments she made about the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, including one of her posts that read, “people wonder why we want these executives dead.”
Sen. Lee, in another post, said that “we can’t let Taylor Lorenz further normalize political violence,” adding that the “legacy media” has done that enough. Lorenz has at times characterized her comments as reflecting the feelings of Americans as a whole, rather than just her opinions.
