Dodgers’ Dave Roberts Addresses Tanner Scott’s Struggles to Start Season

The Los Angeles Dodgers are not getting the kind of production out of Tanner Scott that his four-year, $72 million offseason contract would constitute.

After posting a 1.72 ERA last year with the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres, Scott currently holds a 3.28 mark with four blown saves on the year. Manager Dave Roberts spoke on these early struggles from the closer.

“I think the stuff is still good,” Roberts said. “It’s just right now, it just seems like when there is a mistake, they find some outfield grass or put a good swing on it.”

Two of the last four appearances for Scott have featured a blown save.

Scott still has 10 saves in 14 total opportunities and a prolific 26 strikeouts to just a pair of walks on the year, but nine earned runs and 22 hits allowed across 24.2 innings is still a little too high given his reputation.

The All-Star southpaw came to a Dodgers team that was in need of bullpen help this offseason and had pitching injuries all over the roster.

With 14 pitchers on the injured list and the fifth-highest ERA in the National League, the needle has barely moved for the Dodgers’ pitching roster after bringing in one of the game’s most dominant closers. The trust from Roberts is promising, but changes must be made on Scott’s end as L.A. continues an ultra-competitive stretch of the season.

The Dodgers are in the midst of a series with the Cleveland Guardians, who are competing for the top spot in the American League Central division, Then, they play the New York Yankees, who hold the top spot in the AL East. After that, they play the New York Mets, who recently took a series from L.A.

Ironing out these sub-par moments in the earlier stages of the season is one thing, but Scott will hope that these lapses don’t play a role in October as he looks to get back on track.
