It’s raining, it’s pouring, the old man might have to play baseball at some point this evening.
The Mariners will potentially play the White Sox tonight at Rate Field in Chicago. The game looked like an impossibility yesterday, but the forecast has improved a bit to where some baseball could happen at some point for some length of time. It’s unclear whether the game will start on schedule or at all. The National Weather Service says “all severe hazards will be possible,” although it’s implied the worst of the storm will hit further south than Rate Field. The series is scheduled to wrap up tomorrow afternoon, but the weather doesn’t look much better, to where a doubleheader is the obvious choice. If the Mariners play anymore baseball in Chicago this week, it will be cold, wet, and windy.
UPDATE: First pitch is now “estimated” for 6:15 p.m. PT, according to White Sox social media.
Casey Legumina gets the “start” for the Mariners today as the opener. As Zach Mason detailed on the site yesterday, Legumina appears to be one of the more interesting arms in a bullpen still looking for depth. The Spokesman-Review($) interviewed Legumina earlier this month about his transition from Gonzaga to MLB. Following Beans will be Casey Lawrence, who was activated before the game. Lawrence hasn’t pitched phenomenally for the Mariners this year, but he’s done what’s been asked of him, giving a depleted staff some length on a few occasions. To make room for Lawrence, the Mariners optioned Jhonathan Díaz to Tacoma and designated for assignment Austin Shenton.
Veteran righty Adrian Houser gets the start for the White Sox today and will make his first start of 2025. The White Sox announced this afternoon they’d signed Houser to a one-year, $1.35 million contract. Houser began the year pitching for the Texas Rangers minor league affiliates before being released on May 15.
