It’s a big day in the Spanish capital with Novak Djokovic beginning his Madrid Open campaign while Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek continue theirs.

23:52 CET – In the very last clash of the day in Madrid, 11th seed Tommy Paul has edged out young gun Joao Fonseca 7-6, 7-6 to sneak into the next round and complete the third-round draw on the men’s side. 

Next up for Paul is a meeting with Russian Karen Khachanov.

22:43 CET – Russian Karen Khachanov has edged out big-serving American Reilly Opelka 7-6, 7-6 to book his spot in the third round in Madrid.

21:33 CET – World number two Iga Swiatek has wasted no time booking her place in the next round of Madrid, with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win against Linda Noskova.

20:40 CET – Meanwhile, Jack Draper has completed a golden day for British tennis with a dominant 6-3, 6-4 win against Tallon Griekspoor. 

Finally for now, Frances Tiafoe is through to the third round after Luciano Darderi was forced to retire in the second set. 

20:34 CET – Matteo Berrettini has come from a set down to edge a tense match against Marcos Giron 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 to book his place in the third round.

20:15 CET – Alexandre Muller has edged an all-French clash with Ugo Humbert 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 to power into the third round in Madrid on the men’s side.

19:04 CET – Grigor Dimitrov is through to the third round in Madrid after beating Nicolas Jarry 6-3, 6-4. 15th seed in the tournament, Dimitrov will next play Britain’s Jacob Fearnley.

17:39 CET – On the women’s side in Madrid, Belinda Bencic has overcome 16th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, while over on the men’s, Jacob Fearnley has upset Tomas Machac to progress. 

17:20 CET – Novak Djokovic’s terrible run of form has continued in Madrid. The Serbian great has now lost three matches in a row after being humbled by Matteo Arnaldi 6-3, 6-4 to go out at the first hurdle in Spain.

Next up for Arnaldi will be a match against Damir Dzumhur in the third round.

17:04 CET – Stefanos Tsitsipas has come back to beat Jan-Lennard Struff 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and start his run in Madrid.

The win takes the 17th-seeded Greek into the third round, where he will face 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti.

16:36 CET – Fourth seed Coco Gauff has eased into the final 16 in Madrid after breezing past fellow American Ann Li 6-2, 6-3 in a little over an hour.

15:25 CET – On the men’s side in Madrid, Lucky loser Gabriel Diallo has beaten fellow lucky loser Kamil Majchrzak 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 to set up a third-round meeting with Cameron Norrie.

15:10 CET – Fifth seed Madison Keys has edged Anna Kalinskaya 7-5, 7-6 to move into the fourth round in Madrid.

The Australian Open champion Keys is finding her feet in Madrid, she’s won in straight sets twice now.  

14:48 CET – Yuliia Starodubtseva has upset 18th seed Liudmila Samsonova 2-6, 7-6, 6-0 to book her spot in the final 16 in Madrid.

Up next for the Ukrainian outsider is a meeting with seventh seed Mirra Andreeva.

14:27 CET – Sixth-seeded Aussie Alex De Minaur is into the third round in Madrid as well after beating Lorenzo Sonego 6-2, 6-3.

Next up for De Minaur is a meeting with Denis Shapovalov, who also won earlier today.

14:11 CET – Britain’s Cameron Norrie has come back to beat Czech world number 27 Jiri Lehecka 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 to move into the third round in Madrid.

As a seeded player, Lehecka had a bye in the first round and has thus fallen at his first hurdle in Spain.

13:00 CET – On the men’s side, 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti has overcome Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6, 6-2 to progress to the third round.

12:53 CET – Seventh seed Mirra Andreeva has downed Magdalena Frech 7-5, 6-3 to move into the third round in Madrid.

After a disappointing time in Stuttgart, Andreeva is finding some form in Spain and is yet to drop a set.

12:15 CET – On the men’s side, Denis Shapovalov has beaten Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-4 to progress to the third round.

12:12 CET – Kicking off the results from Madrid for the day, Diana Shnaider has thumped Anastasija Sevastova 6-0, 6-0 in just 45 minutes to book her spot in the fourth round on the women’s side.
